Saturday Volunteer Action Day
Saturday 17 February 2024
10:00 to 12:00
This weekend… SATURDAY Working Group
This week (depending on numbers) we’ll be:
-
Grassland mosaic cutting: We’re really close to achieving our goal to cut, rake and remove 50% of our precious “Lowland Acid Grassland” (LAG) habitat.
-
Bramble Reduction: Continuing to open up visibility along the Tennis Court Path towards David Lloyd
-
Litter-picking: As always! What goodies have Sainsburys and McDonalds left for us this week?
-
Tree Planting: We have two Downy Birch trees to plant. These are local, self-sown trees - donated to us (with thanks to AF and family, who have grown and bagged up the trees). If these transplant successfully, they will help redress the loss of so many of our birch trees in the 2022 drought. We will plant them in the lower-lying (less drought-prone) part of the Heath.
-
Bee Orchids: We need to begin translocation of up 25% of the orchids within the next few weeks - moving self-seeded plants (with as much turf as possible) from mown areas on the edges of David Lloyd’s practice range to areas where they can be allowed to flower. This has to be done carefully - to preserve roots and soil fungi, and the practice range margins!
WHEN: From 10am SATURDAY 17th FEBRUARY until around midday. Over to David Lloyd for free tea/coffee at around 12.
WHERE: Meet at the goal post, rear of David Lloyd as usual. Map
WHO: Anyone and everyone is welcome. As always, please bring your own protective gloves, sensible footwear, drinking water etc. and under 18s must be accompanied.
WHAT: We provide litter-pickers/bags as always, and as many tools as fit in the barrow, but if you have secateurs, rake, strimmer or hedge-trimmer (battery), please do bring them along.
Don’t forget, you can subscribe to the Hampton Heath Friends calendar for up to date information in your Outlook or Calendar app. and we have further information on our website.
Hope to see you on SATURDAY!
